SBC 2021: Wednesday recap (June 17)

Here are the highlights from Wednesday, June 17, the final day of the 2021 Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting:

*California pastor James Westbrook reminded messengers they leave in the power of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. “Lord, we are in great need of your peace,” he prayed.

*Final messenger count totaled 15,726. Discussions from the floor continued, though with a lighter tone.

*A motion by Tennessee pastor Grant Gaines was approved, tasking newly elected SBC president Ed Litton with appointing a task force to assume oversight of the recently announced third-party review of the Executive Committee’s handling of sexual abuse claims, treatment of victims and advocates and resistance to sexual abuse reform issues.

*Messengers also approved a resolution on abolishing abortion immediately without exception or compromise.

*Lee Brand of Mid-America Seminary was elected SBC first vice president. Texas pastor Ramone Medina was elected second vice president.

Full coverage of the 2021 SBC Annual Meeting and related events will be in the June 24 issue of The Baptist Paper and online.
