‘Jesus Revolution’ to cast wider net, ‘bring hope to many’

A movie that already hit it big with Christian audiences will cast a wider net later this month when it comes to Netflix.

“Jesus Revolution” was the #3 movie in the country when it debuted in theaters in February. It highlights the Jesus movement of the 1970s through the experience of evangelist Greg Laurie, whose book of the same name is the basis for the film.

“A whole new audience is going to see this film now,” Laurie tweeted following the Netflix news. “Let’s all be praying that God uses it to touch lives.”

Featuring performances from veteran actor Kelsey Grammer and Jonathan Roumie from “The Chosen” TV series, “Jesus Revolution” marked a return to theaters for moviegoers seeking faith-based entertainment. The film has grossed more than $52 million since its release, and its DVD and Blu-ray versions topped Amazon’s list of bestsellers. It was produced by Kingdom Story Company, the studio behind “American Underdog,” “I Still Believe” and “I Can Only Imagine.”

The movie tells the story of Laurie’s conversion to Christianity and the ministry of Chuck Smith, the late pastor of Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California. Laurie now pastors Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside and has preached the gospel to millions of people through his Harvest Crusades.

Overseas impact

Along with its U.S. success, “Jesus Revolution” has also found audiences overseas, Laurie said in a tweet this week.

He noted the movie is currently playing in the United Kingdom and is being dubbed in Spanish for release in Mexico and Brazil on July 27.

“Let’s be praying God uses this film to bring hope to many,” Laurie said.

Currently offered for rental and purchase on various streaming services, beginning July 31 “Jesus Revolution” will be available to millions of Netflix subscribers in the U.S.
