More than 600 students ‘Converge’ at ministry event

“We kind of looked a what is our identity in the gospel. It has to be found in Christ alone. When we find our identity in the gospel, He gives us a new mission or calling to be his witnesses.”

More than 600 students ‘Converge’ at ministry event

More than 600 college students participated in Converge at Crossings at Cedarmore in Bagdad, Kentucky last weekend.

“Converge does a lot of things,” said Matthew Mofield, who is the campus minister at Morehead State University and the chairman of Converge. “One of the things it does is it is a galvanizing event. It takes students kind of on the fringe and brings them to the core. It’s great for freshmen.”

College students from Baptist Campus Ministries made up most of the 600 although several church college groups attended, Mofield said. UPIKE, a revitalized campus ministry, brought 10 students. Baptist Campus Ministry has about 35 campuses with a goal of reaching 40 by 2025. That includes community colleges, where a different strategy and mindset needs to be employed to reach non-traditional students.

Converge included three days of praise and worship, breakout group meetings and messages from Jamie Ward, the co-pastor at Hillvue Heights Church in Bowling Green. The main focus of the messages was identity.

Identity and a ‘new mission’

“We kind of looked a what is our identity in the gospel,” Mofield said. “It has to be found in Christ alone. When we find our identity in the gospel, He gives us a new mission or calling to be his witnesses.”

Ward spoke on surrendering completely to Christ, Mofield said.

“Commitment over surrendering is the big thing I took away,” he said. “Basically when you commit to something, it’s kind of on your terms. Surrender is on someone else’s terms. When you surrender, there’s no going back. We are surrendering to Christ and not just committing to Him. Jesus calls us to fully surrender.”
