America votes: Trump wins 2nd term; pro-life movement wins, losses

Following a contentious 2024 presidential campaign, Donald Trump declared victory early Wednesday morning and is projected to win the presidency of the United States. He is the country’s 45th and soon-to-be 47th president. Vice President Kamala Harris was reportedly expected to concede the race sometime on Wednesday.

In what was expected by many to be a razor-thin outcome in the presidential race, Trump was declared the winner of races in critical swing states to help him reach the needed 270 electoral votes. Among those critical states were Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Wisconsin. As votes continue to be counted on Wednesday, he also appears likely to win Arizona, Michigan and Nevada.

Trump told supporters early Wednesday morning, “We overcame obstacles that nobody thought possible, and it is now clear that we’ve achieved the most incredible political thing. Look what happened. Is this crazy?”

“We’re going to help our country heal,” Trump also noted during his victory speech. “We have a country that needs help, and it needs help very badly. … And every citizen I will fight for you and your family and your future.”

Senate, House and sanctity of life

Meanwhile, the Republicans are expected to pick up the majority in the Senate, but the House is too close to call. It could be days before those results are announced.

Also, pro-life advocates witnessed both some wins — but more losses — on Tuesday night. Pro-abortion measures reportedly won in at least 7 states.

Brent Leatherwood, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, acknowledged  the ongoing challenges pro-life advocates face in the days ahead, while also noting that voters in Florida, South Dakota and Nebraska “rejected pro-abortion measures, showing there is a path forward for the cause of life.”

“As we process the abortion ballot initiatives from across the country, it is obvious that there is a critical need, not only in policy but at a more basic level, in individual hearts and consciences, for a better understanding of the humanity of preborn children,” he said in a news release.  “The reality is, the majority of states with (pro-abortion) initiatives chose a deadlier path. Preborn children are in danger, and we will work with our churches and partners to oppose and combat this urgent cultural crisis.”

On his podcast The Briefing, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President Albert Mohler seemed to agree that the pro-life movement in the U.S.  is “in big, big trouble. …. And we have to meet that with an even greater determination to speak up for and contend for the unborn in the womb.”
