Death toll rising in Myanmar after 7.7-magnitude earthquake

Rescue workers continue to search through the rubble in Myanmar following  a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck on Friday (March 28). More than 2,000 people are reportedly dead and about 4,000 were injured in the quake that toppled buildings, bridges and other structures.

The quake’s epicenter was reported to be near Mandalay, a city of 1.5 million. At least 18 people were also reported dead in Bangkok, Thailand.

Fear in the streets

The Associated Press reported that a 5.1 magnitude aftershock struck Sunday afternoon. Many reportedly spent the evening sleeping on the streets fearing more aftershocks.

The dominant religion in Myanmar is Buddhism (reportedly 80–90%).
