Supreme Court to hear case involving pregnancy center, free speech

The U.S. Supreme Court announced Monday (June 16) it will hear First Choice Women’s Resource Centers v. Platkin. The case spotlights a New Jersey faith-based pregnancy center fighting a state subpoena it says infringes on its First Amendment rights.

The subpoena, issued by Democratic Attorney General Matthew Platkin, seeks internal documents, including donor lists, advertisements and communications related to abortion pill reversal treatments, the Associated Press reported.

Unlawfully targeted?

First Choice, a Christian nonprofit with multiple locations, offers parenting support, free ultrasounds and baby supplies. Alliance Defending Freedom contends the subpoena targets the center for its pro-life views and unlawfully hinders protected speech, the Christian Post reported.

Platkin maintains the probe is justified under New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act, noting the group may have misled women by implying abortion services were available, according to media reports.

Lower courts have reportedly declined to intervene, citing premature timing. The Supreme Court will now consider whether federal courts can weigh in before state enforcement proceeds.

Arguments are expected this fall.
