New Hampshire has become the first state in the Northeast to ban transgender medical interventions for minors, with two new laws set to take effect Jan. 1, 2026.
The legislation, signed by Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte on Aug. 1, prohibits doctors from prescribing puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to individuals under the age of 18. It also bans gender-transition surgeries except in cases of medical necessity.

Ayotte described the legislation as a “balanced, bipartisan effort to protect children.”
More than half of U.S. states now have similar laws, according to news reports.
