As teachers and students around the nation have begun another year of classes, police are investigating a school shooting in Minneapolis that took the lives of two children and left 17 others wounded on Wednesday (Aug. 27). According to local authorities, a gunman opened fire during Mass at Annunciation Catholic School.
The shooter — a man reportedly in his early 20s — fired dozens of rounds through the church windows at children sitting in the pews. The gunman, who was armed with a rifle, shotgun and pistol, then took his own life, police said in a press conference.
The victims included an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old. A total of 14 of the injured were children, and two of them are reportedly in critical condition. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the attack “absolutely incomprehensible.”
‘Every ounce we can muster’
Mayor Jacob Frey noted a family resource center in the area was being set up to provide support for the community.
“Do not think of these as just somebody else’s kids,” Frey said. “Those families are suffering immense pain right now. Think of this as if it were your own. Everyone of us needs to be wrapping our arms around these families, giving them every ounce we can muster.”
