‘Kids Zone’ outreach impacts kids, families at Iowa car show

One of the big community events in the small town of Lenox, Iowa, is the Steel on Wheels Car Show.

Country Roads Baptist Church in Lenox wanted to find a way to reach kids and families at the event so a few years ago members started a “Kid’s Zone” where children design and decorate their own pinewood derby race cars.

Pastor Mitchell Green said, “Car shows are usually not a kid-friendly event. Most of the time they hear, ‘Don’t touch that!’ At Kid’s Zone, we allow kids to design their own car to race and enter into the design contest. This year, we had 59 kids participate in the race and design contests.”

As part of the trophy ceremony, Pastor Mitchell was able to share the gospel and “winning the prize of the upward call” while building relationships with kids and parents at the car show.

Each year, God uses it to create conversations and introduce the church to new families in Lenox.

“It’s a lot of fun and a lot of energy,” he said. “The kids get to be hands on”

The church thanked the Baptist Convention of Iowa for helping fund the outreach event.
