It’s not over yet. Will McRaney has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review a Fifth Circuit ruling that dismissed his lawsuit against the Southern Baptist Convention’s North American Mission Board under the church autonomy doctrine.

McRaney contends NAMB interfered in his 2015 firing as executive director of the Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware and disrupted his efforts for later employment. Two appellate judges noted courts cannot hear the case without violating church autonomy. But McRaney reportedly maintains his claims are secular and that extending church autonomy this far threatens religious liberty and individual legal rights.
