Peace deal between US and Iran announced, questions remain

The United States and Iran announced Sunday (June 14) that they have agreed on an interim peace deal, now set to be signed on Friday.

President Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened that day, and that the U.S. naval blockade on Iran would be simultaneously lifted. U.S. stock futures soared this morning in response, while U.S. oil futures dropped. Specifics on the deal remain unknown.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth spoke Sunday morning during an interview on CBS’ Face The Nation about the agreement the U.S. and Iran have been negotiating. “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. Never. Full stop,” he said. “And this deal — it’s performance-based. No money released to Iran until they perform.”

Meanwhile, the US soccer team won its first World Cup match and will now host Australia on Friday. If you don’t really care about the World Cup, you’re decidedly in the global minority. As Dr. Ryan Denison reported recently, the Super Bowl is seen by 125.6 million people; for the 2022 World Cup final, 1.42 billion people tuned in.

In more sports news, the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs Saturday night to win their first NBA title since 1973. In the National Hockey League, the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights last night to win their first Stanley Cup in 20 years.
