Sounding alarm: Social media trend pushes children to ‘disown’ parents

A social media-fueled trend continues to encourage young adults to “disown” or permanently sever ties with their own parents. No formal process, legal action or even a crisis call is required — only that a child brands a parent as “toxic,” “narcissistic” or similarly disordered.

Known as the “No-Contact” (or NC) movement, the phenomenon has proliferated across TikTok, Reddit, Instagram and similar platforms. Content creators post polished narratives of “liberating” themselves from family, framing the cutoff as an act of self-care or personal growth. These videos and threads routinely draw high engagement, validation and views, reinforcing a feedback loop that turns private family friction into public performance.

Over time, this has produced ready-made cultural scripts: Young people adopt identical clinical and therapeutic language — “narcissist,” “gaslighting,” “toxic,” “emotionally immature,” “boundaries,” “trauma” — to diagnose their upbringing and justify estrangement. Ordinary generational clashes, imperfect parenting, political or value differences, or mere disappointment are frequently pathologized into clinical-level abuse.

Roots and consequences

Children’s rights advocate and Christian author Katy Faust has sounded the alarm, tracing the trend’s deeper roots and consequences. “The trend of eliminating ‘toxic’ relationships has unfortunately been around for a while,” she told Decision. “Increasingly, prioritizing ‘chosen family’ over the adults who birthed, nurtured, raised, guided, shielded and invested in you is presented as liberation.”

“Of course,” she continued, “‘toxic’ often doesn’t mean toxic at all.” Faust explained how the label is often misapplied: “It may simply describe parents who refuse to condone or facilitate decisions and identities they believe are destructive or harmful. That refusal is not arbitrary or controlling. It often stems from the deeper protection, investment and connection that sets the parent-child relationship apart from nearly every other relationship.”

In August of 1996, I headed off to college as a freshman with a “hi-tech” word processor in tow and little awareness or understanding of the Internet, much less access to it. Equally, I was largely unaware of or affected by the temptation of pornography.

“I don’t want to be worshiped, because there’s a scripture in my Bible that talks about idol worship,” Dolly Parton said in a 2021 interview. “And I see that happening all the time with movie stars and these celebrities. People literally worship them more than they worship God. And I just — I cringe at it sometimes.”
