In a time when traditional church revivals have become less common, five small Baptist churches in southeastern Kentucky came together for a week of worship, prayer and renewed fellowship — drawing packed crowds and strengthening relationships that have continued beyond the services.
What began as a conversation between Roundstone Baptist Church Pastor Bill Hammond and Poplar Grove Baptist Church Pastor Mike McFerron grew into a Monday through Friday revival involving churches across the Rockcastle Baptist Association.
Each evening, the gathering moved to a different church. Each host pastor delivered the message and led the congregation in worship. The participating churches included Roundstone Baptist, Poplar Grove Baptist, Livingston Baptist, Macedonia Baptist and Valley Baptist.
Unlike anything
For Hammond, who has spent 45 years in ministry, he said the response was unlike anything he had experienced.
“I’ve been preaching for 45 years, and this has been one of the [most] overwhelming moments I’ve ever had,” Hammond said.
Attendance averaged approximately 146 people each night, with crowds ranging from 125 to 160. At Roundstone Baptist, a church that normally seats around 85 people, volunteers brought out additional chairs from classrooms and other areas to accommodate 143 people.
Throughout the week, the messages encouraged those attending to reflect on their relationship with God. Hammond reported two faith professions and approximately 10 rededications, as well as numerous people responding during the services.
