Dictionary.com has picked its word of the year for 2026 — maxxing, which is rooted in the words maximum and maximize.
According to Dictionary.com, “Maxxing is a word that refers to the practice of pursuing an activity to the fullest or optimizing a certain aspect of your life.”
The word can be used by itself or in combination with another word to create a specific term for the aspect they are pursuing, such as ‘looksmaxxing’ (‘maxxing’ one’s appearance) or ‘proteinmaxxing’ (‘maxxing’ one’s time spent in the gym and consuming said protein).
Where did they find that word?
Reports indicate the main use of word has been on social media platforms such as Reddit.
“In a year dominated by discussions of technology’s role in society, it’s only natural that we selected a word that was forged online,” said Dictionary.com.
Tik Tok is another platform that has seen the spread of ‘maxxing’, with one creator, @dhanya, stating in a caption on one of her posts, “What’s the point of life if you aren’t maxxing it?”.
The word ‘maxxing’ alone, although typically associated with another word in front of it, also became a popular search term on its own, hence its status as word of the year.
As a culture that is known for its business and perfectionism, “maxxing” creates an idea that encompasses this way of life into one word.
“Maxxing is the linguistic manifestation of a culture that increasingly values optimization,” said Dictionary.com.
Versatile word
This word can not only have different meanings (by attaching other words to the beginning), but it also can be used in a number of connotations.
Dictionary.com said, “Used on its own or attached to almost anything else, maxxing can be earnest, aspirational or mocking. It captures the very 2026 urge to keep pushing harder while also giving us a way to poke fun at ourselves when optimizing our lives starts to feel absurd.”
‘Maxxing’ is the epitome of a shared culture and lifestyle that so many people uphold.
Other honorable mentions that almost made the cut for word of the year were affordability, data center, odyssey and unc.
