Movie night: Evangelism grant helps Pennsylvania church reach local families

Harvest Church–Kittanning has drawn crowds through hosting monthly movie nights for entire families that provide dinner and a movie — and also an opportunity to hear the gospel.

The mission at the Pennsylvania church is to increase the health and size of God’s church everywhere, they said.

“By hosting these events, we are providing the opportunity for our church family to bring other friends and family to an event at our church who might not have attended previously,” the church recently reported through the Baptist Resource Network of Pennsylvania/South Jersey, which helped provide resources for the event from an evangelism grant.

“Our goal is to draw in people who have never entered a church building before and provide them with an event in our facility where they will not only enjoy a fun evening, but, most importantly, hear the gospel presented.”

The church advertised the event through paid advertising on social media, free newspaper bulletins and by word of mouth from the congregation. By encouraging pre-registration for the event, they were able to collect follow-up information to reach out and get to know new people.

Halfway through the movie, one of the church’s kids ministry teachers presented the gospel and his personal testimony, along with a call to action.

“We are prayerful that a strong seed was planted in those who do not presently call Jesus their Lord and Savior,” reported the church, who invited families to attend Harvest Kidz, their program that provides classes for nursery to 6th grade students, and they welcomed the adults to their three weekend services.

“Many adults expressed excitement towards the movie nights, and children could not stop asking their parents if they could attend the next one. We were so thankful for the opportunity, not only to present the gospel to so many people, but also to provide a fun night for everyone.”

One of their most recent events drew about 150 people. Of those 150 people, about 35% were brand new to Harvest, 10% had only attended 1-2 events in the past and 55% were church family, the church reported.
