Don Currence to be nominated for SBC registration secretary

Don Currence will be nominated for registration secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention during the SBC Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, June 14–15.

Currence has served as the administrative pastor for First Baptist Church Ozark, Missouri, since 1993. He currently is the only candidate for registration secretary to be announced.

Amy Whitfield, executive director of communications at The Summit Church in Durham, North Carolina, announced Monday (May 9) she plans to nominate Currence, Baptist Press reported.

“I have watched him fulfill this role over the last several years and have tremendous respect for his humility and tireless work ethic,” Whitfield said of Currence, who had assisted longtime registration secretary Jim Wells before being elected to the position in 2018 and 2019. He served as acting registration secretary in 2021 after Kathy Litton, who had been elected to the position, stepped down when her husband, Ed, announced he would be nominated — and was later elected — for SBC president.

“Don’s intense preparation and commitment to integrity ensures a smooth process that Southern Baptists can trust,” Whitfield noted. “He always puts the messengers first and leads his team of volunteers to do the same. He serves cheerfully and makes everyone he encounters feel at ease.”

Currence previously served at FBC Houston, Missouri, and two other churches in Louisiana, according to his church’s website. He also has served in various Baptist leadership roles in Missouri and Louisiana, which has included serving as a trustee for New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Southwest Baptist University and his master’s from NOBTS.

He and his wife, Cheta, have two daughters.
