Louisiana pastor Jay Adkins will be nominated as first vice president for the Southern Baptist Convention during its annual meeting in New Orleans, announced pastor Fred Luter on Tuesday (Feb. 14).
Luter, a former SBC president and pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, described Adkins as a “faithful small-church pastor” and representative of the “vast majority of Southern Baptist churches.” Adkins is also a “committed advocate” of the ministry of local associations, Luter noted in a statement to Baptist Press.
A fourth generation Baptist preacher, Adkins is pastor of First Baptist Church Westwego and has served in a variety of roles for the New Orleans Baptist Association of Churches. He has served on a national level with the SBC tellers and committee on nominations, and he serves as chair of the local encouragement team for this year’s annual meeting in New Orleans.
Adkins received a bachelor’s degree in Christian ministry from Leavell College and holds master’s degrees and a Ph.D. from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He also is a co-editor of and contributor to SBC Voices and has been involved with SBC Disaster Relief efforts as a chaplain, “Blue Cap” volunteer and “White Cap” leader during Katrina, according to his church website.
Adkins and his wife Michelle have two sons.
