THE SIGN OF HIS PRESENCE
John 6:16–21
When was the last time you experienced fear? You may think a response such as fear is reserved for children or for those who are weak in temperament. You would be mistaken. As we mature into adulthood, our fears will change in content and depth. We no longer fear the dark but may be uneasy about our finances. We no longer fear the boogeyman but may have thoughts of anxiety regarding a doctor’s appointment.
No matter the frequency or severity of fear, it can hinder our well-being and compromise our walk with the Lord. What can give us stability when our minds or situations are wobbly? What can calm the storms when they rage? It is the presence of Jesus. Being assured that Jesus is with us is the greatest gift we have. In this passage, the disciples were reminded of this fact firsthand.
Life without Jesus is dangerous. (16–18)
We can access a weather radar and forecast in seconds thanks to modern technology. We have time to track the storm, know its size and determine what damage may occur. Satellites from miles above us can show what is happening on our own street. Of course, 2,000 years ago, the disciples had none of these advancements available to them.
When storms entered their area, they had no way of knowing ahead of time. The same is true for us when tragedy comes into our lives. Most of the difficulties we face are unpredictable and without warning. In our world, storms will take place and affect everyone.
Jesus’ presence brings peace. (19–20)
Jesus did then what He does now: He shows up. He makes His presence known in His time and in His way. If you have a red-letter edition Bible, you will notice something incredible. Jesus only speaks a few words in this whole story. He assures them who He is and tells them not to be afraid.
He does not scorn them or even laugh at their fear. Instead, He joins them and brings peace along. What situation are you in right now where you need peace? My friend, the answer is the presence of Jesus. He will not desert you in your storm. He will enter into your difficulties.
Jesus’ presence will see us through. (21)
The disciples both quickly and willingly brought Jesus on board with them. Storms are a certainty in our lifetime, but trusting Jesus is a choice. We can focus on the storm, the damage or our feelings, or we can lean on Jesus to calm us. The beautiful part of this story is their arrival to the shore and dry land. You and I will not have lasting peace until we reach the other side of this life and see Jesus face to face. In addition to the peace His presence brings, note the final destination.
We can become so consumed with our present situation that we forget that everything we experience or see around us is temporary. A day is coming and a place is waiting for all who keep their eyes on Jesus. The waves will continue to crash while we are journeying through this life.
There will be times of fear and uncertainty for us all. Remain faithful, trust Jesus and experience His life-changing presence.
