Bible Studies for Life Sunday School Lesson for May 25

GOD’S HAND IN FACING OPPOSITION

2 Kings 6:8–12, 15–23

I believe that our country is more divided now than at any point in its history. I know that is debatable, but it seems we Americans are at war with each other over many things.

The most significant division point in the last several years has been politics. As citizens, we can vote and express our likes or dislikes over candidates and their platforms. However, it seems the days are gone when two people can disagree in a civil matter and still be friends.

What used to be seen as having a different perspective is now grounds for some to hate others and oppose them in every way. This is tragic because this behavior can trickle down to the local church and families, causing irreparable and long-lasting effects. As Christians, we are in a spiritual battle with opposition from the world, the flesh and the devil waiting for us each day. However, we are not alone in this struggle.

Nothing is beyond God’s knowledge. (8–12)

In this passage, we pick up where the king of Aram is planning a sneak attack against Israel. His plans were foiled and he was understandably angry. Do you realize that God sees any attack against God’s people as an attack against Him? Our greatest foe isn’t against the person who occupies the White House or the state capitol.

Our primary enemy is Satan. There is no truth in him and no shred of wisdom or anything of value in his being. He is the father of lies, the deceiver and the accuser, and his mission is to kill, steal and destroy. You are his target. He desires to tempt you, sift you like wheat, discourage you and cause you to doubt. But our Heavenly Father is stronger than he will ever be. God knows what you are facing and will help you in your battle. Don’t you dare give up or ever think God does not care. He does and is with you in your darkest times of need.

God opens our eyes to see His work. (15–17)

In these amazing verses, we are reminded of the power of God. It is easy for even the best of us to become discouraged when we see the rampant evil in our world today. However, what we do not see with our physical eyes is the Almighty Father fighting on our behalf. I am convinced that each day, the grace of God spares us from unseen tragedies and attacks that we may never fully realize.

When you cannot see God’s hand at work in your situation, you can still trust His heart and love for you.

Be kind and gracious to those who oppose you. (18–23)

When God chooses to give you victory over your enemies, do not forget to thank Him. Without Him, we have no hope of defeating our enemies. Show humility and thanksgiving in the face of your enemies. Be kind to those who hurt you or seek to do you harm. By doing so, you point others to Christ.

Battles for believers are hard and draining, but they don’t have to be the end of your story. Meditate on the mercy God shows you and strive to extend it to others as well. How you respond expresses your level of trust in God.
