GOD SPEAKS THROUGH HIS CHURCH
Ephesians 4:11–16, 25–29
There is nothing in this world quite like the Church. If you stop and think about it, the Church has only survived due to the fact that its foundation is Christ. Where else can you find such a varied group of people under one roof? Socioeconomic, political, racial, educational and family dynamics categories are all put to the side when we assemble together.
Church is not a building; it is a body of believers. Is the Church perfect? No. It never will be on this side of heaven.
Some take great pleasure in criticizing the Church and highlighting its shortcomings. I pity these people. The Church is the primary means God has chosen to share the gospel, make disciples and distribute salt and light in local communities and beyond.
In spite of its flaws, God graciously uses the Church to reveal His plans. Many times, the voice of God is most clearly heard among mature believers in worship services.
God speaks through our spiritual leaders. (11–14)
When it comes to vehicle mechanics and engines, I can assure you I am extremely limited in my knowledge and understanding of how things work. However, as a driver, I can sense when something is wrong with my old Ford.
It might be a sound, a warning light or a difference in how it maneuvers. It does not take a trained mechanic to know that all the parts need to work in unison for a smoother, safer ride.
In these verses, Paul lists several distinct roles within the Church. Notice what happens when these leaders are faithful to their tasks. They build up the body, equip people to serve, aid in maturity, help bring others to Christ and secure unity in the fellowship.
God speaks through the body of believers — His Church. (15–16)
These roles do not mean exclusivity among the members. The pastor does not have privileged access to the Father while others do not. God speaks to all Christians who are willing to listen and obey. There is no biblical basis for a hierarchy or tiered level of leadership or service.
The cross of Christ secures access to God for all believers at all times. God is willing to speak to our churches. The challenge is, are you willing to listen?
God speaks through us to others in the Church. (25–29)
Sometimes, you may feel inclined to say something of a spiritual nature to someone in the Church. If you have any doubt, ask yourself: Is it biblical? Is it necessary? Does it edify? Will it help the Church? If the answer to any of these questions is no, it is not from God.
Each of us has opinions, but that does not mean they are from the Lord. Also, there are times when God puts something heavy on our hearts to share with someone, and we are overflowing with urgency to do so. This is one of the many reasons church membership and connection are so important for the believer.
There are blessings and words of encouragement others would never hear unless they belonged to a church. God is speaking. Make sure you are listening and sharing.
