GOD SPEAKS THROUGH HIS HOLY SPIRIT
1 Corinthians 2:6–16
One of the more interesting parts of growing older is the role friends play in your life. Young children are quick to tell you who their best friends are. Young adults have circles of people they associate with or share activities with. As a person advances over the years, friends may pass away or relocate while others lose touch and become a memory. Occasionally, someone from our past will resurface only to disappear again.
While friendships are one of the most special blessings God gives a person, they are not meant to replace our relationship with Him.
Our heavenly Father knew we would need His presence and comfort throughout our lives. Yes, a friend can provide those things but not like He does.
In His perpetual pursuit to reveal Himself to man, Jesus shared with His disciples that He would be physically leaving them, but the Holy Spirit would come and accompany and guide them all of their days. Still today, the Holy Spirit speaks to believers.
We can’t comprehend His will by our own power or reasoning. (6–8)
The Holy Spirit of God has many wonderful attributes, including that He makes it possible for us to understand the Word of God.
Our faith is not solely academic. It is a spiritual work only made a reality by the enabling and power of the Holy Spirit who reveals to us the mysteries of God.
This gift is one that should not be overlooked and should result in thanksgiving. Consider that God wants to know you and provides everything to make this happen. It is the highest demonstration of grace possible.
The Holy Spirit reveals the mind of God. (9–11)
There is not a man alive who truly understands the mind of women, and women are perplexed at the thoughts and reasoning of men. God has wired males and females differently in many ways, and we are left scratching our heads at times. Even greater than the difference in the sexes is the vast and limitless mind of God.
We read in these verses that the Holy Spirit knows the mind of God. The closer relationship of trust and dependence I have with Him, the more I will be in tune to God’s will and purposes for my life.
Have you ever wondered how you would have responded to or received Christ if you lived in the days of His earthly ministry? The answer may be found in asking yourself how much you depend on the Holy Spirit and seek His guidance now. An authentic believer desires more of God and seeks to live a transformed life.
We must rely on the Holy Spirit to help us apply Scripture to our lives. (12–16)
Without the Holy Spirit as our guide, we will be discouraged in our Bible intake and study. Think of it this way: The Holy Spirit shines a light on the Scripture while opening our hearts and minds so we can understand.
Have you ever read a verse and thought, “Oh, I get it now!”? That is the gift and power of the Holy Spirit teaching you the truths of God’s Word. The Holy Spirit wants to teach us all. Are you willing to listen and learn? He is the best friend you will ever have.
