Bible Studies for Life Sunday School Lesson for Sept. 7

THE GREATEST NAME

Isaiah 42:1–12

In the last few years, there has been a rise in the use of the acronym “GOAT” — greatest of all time. Widely used among sports enthusiasts, each will make a case for their GOAT. Michael Jordan, Tom Brady and Ted Williams are all familiar names when these discussions arise.

Once in a sermon, I had the congregation say aloud the name of the greatest British rock band of all time. Of course, the correct answer is Queen. Some referenced the Beatles, and others suggested the Rolling Stones. While my opinion is that Queen is the best, it is all debatable.

Some make enthusiastic arguments about their favorite athlete, singer or musician. The truth is, there is no way to prove who is the greatest in a particular area. A measuring stick is not available to validate such claims. It comes down to a person’s preference.

When it comes to God, there is no person or thing remotely comparable. There is no debate. His holiness, righteousness and love for us are unfathomable and wondrous beyond degree. While there is nothing wrong with recognizing the talents and efforts of others, we must not forget that God is worthy of our praise and commitment.

God brings glory to His name through His Chosen One. (1–4)

So much of what people do in church life is for their benefit or recognition. Christ makes it clear that we will be rewarded for our actions when we don’t seek praise or validation from others.

Everything about Jesus brought glory to the heavenly Father. His teachings, miracles, interactions with others, prayer life and power to forgive all point back to God the Father. His whole existence radiated with the Father’s glory. This should cause us to examine ourselves and honestly evaluate who or what our lives are promoting. Selfishness and pride are always knocking at the door for each of us.

God’s name deserves glory for the purpose and relationship He offers. (5–8)

God alone is worthy of our worship. These wonderful verses bear testimony to the measure of His vast creation and His mission to connect with us. He has the power to hang the stars and heal the sick.

He restores sight to the blind and shines light in dark places. If you have a spiritual need, God can meet it. The greatest miracle that you or I can experience is to know God through a relationship with Christ.

Our only assurance of salvation and the forgiveness of sins is made possible by Jesus. God choosing to send His Son for us while desiring communion with us is the greatest testament of all of His glory.

God’s name deserves glory from all people. (9–12)

Although you may get discouraged sometimes and think you are the only believer left in the world, take heart! Our God is much bigger than that. He is known and worshipped among people groups, tribes, nations and cultures. He is the Creator of all and came to save all, and all who believe in Him will be saved.

Imagine the day when we are all worshipping together with our brothers and sisters from all over the world. At that moment, nothing else will matter or occupy our thoughts except for the glory and majesty of our God. His name is the greatest name of all. Share it with someone today.
