The IRS’s decision to close its investigation, first opened in 2024, comes after the church prayed for a local school board candidate during its church service in 2022.

When Rick Martinez stepped into his role as associational mission strategist for Miami Baptist Association, he carried with him a deep conviction: mobilization must be at the heart of the association’s mission.

SBCAL was started in 1960 as a way to train directors of missions and to provide networking opportunities for leaders of associations. Today, there are 780 members of SBCAL.

“When Hurricane Helene came through, we got hit with three feet of water … we lost about 90% of everything we owned,” said Ronnie Rentz. “I couldn’t even get into the house at first because all the water had picked up our furniture.”

“We’ve never experienced anything like this,” said Tom Turman, director of Ferris Hill Baptist Church’s cold weather shelter.

Florida Baptist executive pastor Chris Dotson believes that building a fence really high is a matter of “gospel integrity.” He takes this conviction to heart in guarding South Tampa Fellowship against sexual abuse.
