Ceasefire between Israel, Hamas takes effect; what next?

A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect Friday (Oct. 10) at noon local time. The news reportedly signaled the end of a two-year war that left tens of thousands dead.

The deal calls for Hamas to release 48 Israeli hostages within 72 hours in exchange for more than 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, The World and Everything in It podcast reported. Israeli forces will reportedly withdraw to positions controlling about 53% of Gaza. World leaders hailed the news, while the UN prepared to deliver massive humanitarian aid as discussions begin on Gaza’s postwar future, according to various news outlets.
