A Maine church’s fight for its day in federal district court became a reality Tuesday (Feb. 24) after being denied rental space at a local public high school four years ago, Decision Magazine reported.
A bench trial in The Pines Church v. Hermon School Department began earlier this week in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, the report noted. This comes four years after the church first sought a lease. Attorneys with Advocates for Faith & Freedom contend the board conditioned access on theological agreement, and they added this violates First and Fourteenth Amendment protections. The church, said pastor Matt Gioia, simply seeks fair access and is urging prayer support, according to the report.
