Mission fields are everywhere, and every community has an important one. The local law enforcement community is often overlooked, but churches can make an impact.
Here are eight ways churches can support officers:
1. Pray intentionally and publicly.
Set aside times to pray for officers, their families and leadership. It shows their work is meaningful and difficult.
2. Host an annual “First Responder Appreciation Day”
Many churches already do this. Scheduling it near National Police Week in May works well.
3. Provide practical care packages.
Offer snacks, drinks and encouragement cards for precinct break rooms. Small gestures are remembered.
4. Offer the church as a safe gathering space.
Departments can use church facilities for meetings, training, chaplain gatherings, or critical incident debriefs. They’re also ideal for Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers chapters.
5. Develop a chaplaincy or care team.
Train volunteers to ride along, respond to injuries or deaths, and support families during crises. Many departments welcome this spiritual support.
6. Care for officers’ families.
Host family nights, provide childcare for date nights, and offer counseling when trauma affects home life. Supporting families supports officers.
7. Build personal relationships.
Encourage members to meet officers for coffee or meals, attend community forums, and foster respectful dialogue. Real relationships defuse stereotypes.
8. Be present after difficult incidents
After shootings, accidents, or line-of-duty deaths, churches can provide compassionate support.
