Twice in recent years, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship groups have been removed from university student organization options, and now twice this year the courts have disagreed.
The most recent ruling came July 16 from the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals stating the University of Iowa violated the First Amendment rights of the group, specifically that the university violated InterVarsity’s speech, association and free exercise of religion rights, according to media reports.
In April, a federal judge in Michigan said Wayne State University in Detroit violated the rights of the InterVarsity group on that campus. InterVarsity is an evangelical ministry that welcomes all students but limits its leaders to those who affirm its statement of faith.
