Deadly 6.0 earthquake in Afghanistan: Search for survivors continues

A deadly 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan Sunday (Aug. 31), claiming more than 1,400 lives and leaving over 3,000 people injured. Entire villages were leveled in Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, where mud-brick homes collapsed, trapping residents under rubble, according to media reports.

Deadly 6.0 earthquake in Afghanistan: Search for survivors continues

A deadly 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan Sunday (Aug. 31), claiming more than 1,400 lives and leaving over 3,000 people injured, the Associated Press reported. Entire villages were leveled in Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, where mud-brick homes collapsed, trapping residents under rubble, according to the BBC.

The UN’s humanitarian coordinator Indrika Ratwatte warned the number of wounded and dead could soar into the hundreds of thousands. Rough terrain and destroyed roads continue to block access to needed supplies, according to the news podcast The World and Everything in It. Rescue teams, including air-dropped Taliban commandos and aid workers carrying supplies on foot, reportedly continue a race against time to reach remote survivors.
