Amid horrific flash flooding that swept through central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend, Camp Mystic — an all-girls Christian summer camp — confirmed Monday (July 7) the loss of 27 campers and counselors. Statewide, the death toll from related flooding has reportedly reached at least 90 people, with dozens still missing.

Meanwhile, Southern Baptists of Texas Disaster Relief teams and Texans on Mission are among those ministering in the Texas Hill Country. The area continues to brace for more rain and potential flooding through Tuesday.

The Guadalupe River reportedly surged more than 26 feet in under an hour early Friday, destroying buildings and sweeping away people in its path, according to media reports. In a released statement, the camp said it is working closely with local and state authorities in a continued search for the missing.

Death toll rises

Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha reportedly confirmed at least 68 deaths in the county, including 28 children. Gov. Greg Abbott and President Trump have declared emergencies to mobilize state and federal aid.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick urged continued hope: “We are not giving up on a miracle happening.”
