GOD’S CARE

Psalm 23:1–6

Psalm 23 is one of the most famous and practical chapters in the Book of Psalms. Many believers have memorized this psalm because of its message. Psalm 23 describes believers as sheep and the Lord as a personal Shepherd.

A shepherd lived with his flock and functioned as a guide, veterinarian and protector. As a project for a 4-H club our sons showed sheep at county fairs. We learned a great deal about shepherds and sheep. One lesson we learned was that sheep stink!

As sheep belonging to God, we also stink at times. The comforting message of Psalm 23 is often shared during funeral messages, but this psalm is a message of our Shepherd’s care for the living sheep of His flock.

God’s Provision (1–3)

David was shepherding his father’s flock when he was chosen to become the king of Israel. Moving from being a young man looking after sheep to leading the flock of God was a big leap. The imagery of a human shepherd in David’s time was of a royal leader caring for his subjects. In the New Testament, Jesus claimed to be the Good Shepherd (John 10:11, 14). King David realized that a greater Shepherd provided all he needed.

Sheep need green pastures, still waters from which to drink and renewal of life due to harsh conditions. Sheep also need direction to stay on the right paths for God’s name’s sake.

Many passages in the Bible describe sheep wandering away from the flock. The right paths are paths that bring glory to God’s name.

God’s Protection (4)

During the challenging days of our lives in which we feel like we are going through a dark valley, we do not need to fear danger because God is with us even in those darkest days. God’s rod and staff comfort a believer because the image of a staff symbolizes protection and security.

When have you needed God’s protection or guidance? How did God provide for you?

God’s Care (5–6)

The imagery within the psalm shifts from God as Shepherd to the imagery of an intimate friendship and a banquet at which God serves as Host. God prepares a table and anoints the head of His guests in the presence of any enemies.

Olive oil was used to treat dry or cracked skin, and according to the “Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary,” it was a sign of hospitality to offer oil to visitors.

In the culture of the time, a host was obligated to protect a guest at all costs. In addition to preparing a banquet, God invites believers to live with Him in His house as long as the psalmist (or a believer) lives.

Have you experienced God’s goodness and love?
