The Baptist World Alliance announced over the weekend the passing of Neville Callam, BWA general secretary emeritus, after a brief illness.
“His faithful ministry, theological insight, and unwavering commitment to Christ left an enduring mark on the global Baptist movement,” said in a Aug. 15 news release.
A native of Gibraltar, Jamaica, Callam served as general secretary of the BWA from 2007–2017. His election marked the first Black person and first leader from outside Europe or North America to hold the BWA’s highest ministerial and executive office.
‘Humble servant leadership’
“Callam’s life was marked by extraordinary scholarship, pastoral compassion and humble servant leadership,” BWA said. “An accomplished theologian and ethicist, he believed that every aspect of Christian ministry must be grounded in the gospel of Jesus Christ. He consistently challenged Baptists around the world to think theologically, live faithfully and pursue unity without compromising conviction.”
During his decade of service with the BWA, the release said, Callam guided the global fellowship through one of the most challenging periods in its history.
Assuming office just before the 2008 global financial crisis, he led the organization with “steady resolve, working to secure its financial foundation while expanding its worldwide witness. Under his leadership, BWA enhanced its administrative and operational framework through revised fiscal and human resource policies while also modernizing its information technology infrastructure.”
He welcomed 24 new member organizations into the global Baptist family, expanding the BWA’s presence into new countries and territories. Committed to fostering Baptist unity, he led the collaborative development and publication of the Covenant on Intra-Baptist Relationships, now translated into 25 languages. He also championed new initiatives in mission and justice.
