Messengers will have four options to consider for president of the Southern Baptist Convention this afternoon (June 14) with a last-minute announcement this morning by Georgia pastor Frank Cox. The election is set for 4:20 p.m. PDT.
Cox, who has been pastor of North Metro Baptist Church, Lawrenceville, Georgia, for more than 40 years, announced via Baptist Press his plans to be nominated by Florida pastor Ted Traylor.
Cox is a graduate of Mercer University in Atlanta. He earned his master of divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and received his doctor of ministry degree from Luther Rice Seminary in Atlanta.
Cox has held many positions of leadership including president of the Georgia Baptist Convention and first vice president of the SBC, according to the church website. He also has preached at a variety of conferences and universities, including the SBC Pastors Conference and Liberty University.
Cox has also authored “Trusting God’s Heart,” the story of the sickness and death of his first wife, Debbie, and what God taught him through grief and how God restored his joy.
Pastor Cox is married to Mary, and they have three children.
The other known nominees for SBC president are Tom Ascol, Bart Barber and Robin Hadaway.
