Over the weekend, plenty of footage of buildings burnings and protests in France drew the eyes of the world. French authorities arrested more than 2,400 people during nationwide protests that erupted into rioting over rising living costs and poor school conditions, the Associated Press reported.
Masked rioters could be seen looting businesses, setting buildings ablaze and clashing with police in Paris. Authorities deployed tear gas in efforts to gain control of the crowd. While social media claims circulated about hundreds of churches being burned, those claims have apparently not been confirmed. Meanwhile, President Emmanuel Macron has condemned the violence. He reportedly blamed radical left-wing activists and criminals while acknowledging protesters’ concerns.
Macron also pledged meetings this week with students, teachers, unions and local officials. There also have reportedly been calls for some cities to impose partial curfews to help authorities prevent further damage.
