Gospel courage empowers ministers to remain faithful despite criticism, hardship, Harrison says

Courageous leadership is never going to win popularity contests, but gospel courage empowers ministers to overcome fear, endure suffering and remain faithful despite criticism or hardship.

“If you want to be filled with gospel courage, you’ve got to cling to a gospel hope,” said John Mark Harrison, pastor of First Baptist Concord in Knoxville, Tennessee, speaking to those gathered for the June 8 opening session of the 2025 Southern Baptist Convention Pastors Conference in Dallas.

Preaching from 2 Timothy 1:8–14 on the conference theme, “Worth Following,” Harrison said gospel hope is rooted in the finished work of Christ.

Ministry challenges

“When Paul is writing this [letter], there was every reason to be overwhelmed and consumed by the things he wasn’t certain of or was uncomfortable with. … There’s every reason for Paul … to be discouraged. Yet Paul’s testimony is that because of Jesus, he’s encouraged.”

Ministers today face many challenges, including criticism, insecurity, spiritual pride and cultural or political pressures, but God’s call hasn’t changed, Harrison said.

“He’s calling us to speak clearly. He’s calling us to shepherd courageously,” Harrison said. “Don’t let criticism keep you from courage. Look to the Good Shepherd and carry out your call.”

“Far too many pastors look to their influence in the community for fulfillment. … Fulfillment comes from Christ and Christ alone.”

Gospel-centric approach

Gospel courage also comes from resting in a gospel call and amplifying your gospel witness.

Despite being in prison, Paul continued his ministry with confidence in God’s purpose and grace. His confidence rested in his relationship with Christ and his trust in God’s protection and guidance.

Harrison shared his own personal testimony of wrestling with the call to ministry. He recalled being “so nervous” the first time he stood in front of a group of people to give the halftime devotion at a youth basketball game.

“The Holy Spirit started working in me then,” he said. “A call to ministry, friends, is a good call from a good God, and the call of God in our life is what fills us with His courage.”
