Calvary Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas, has opened its doors to serve as a shelter to those displaced following a fire at the Midtown Park Apartments on Markham Street.
According to reports, the fire began at about 4:40 p.m. on Dec. 31. Associate minister Rick Couch said he received a call that evening from the American Red Cross, who they have worked with in the past, asking if they could use the church facilities. He told them to come on down.
“That’s what we’re here for. We’re here to help,” Couch said. “… That is part of what we are always looking to do. We’re glad to always help out our community.”
The American Red Cross came in, set up a temporary shelter and is serving about 40 residents displaced by the apartment complex fire.
As of Friday morning, Couch said there was no deadline for the residents. He encouraged folks to pray for them.
“They’re just kind of in limbo right now, waiting to see when they can get back into their apartments,” Couch said.
According to reports, one person died, and multiple others were taken to the hospital after the fire at the Little Rock apartment complex.
