Islamist extremists kill 21 Christians, set fire to church in Mozambique

Islamist extremists killed 21 Christians in October attacks in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province.

On Oct. 26, one individual was killed when jihadists set fire to a church and some homes in the Chiure district of Cabo Delgado, relief group Barnabas Fund reported.

Twenty others were killed and hundreds displaced in Islamist attacks between Oct. 3 and 20.

Ahlu Sunnah Wa-Jama (also known as Al-Shabaab), affiliated with the Islamic State, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

In September, Islamists killed another eight believers in Cabo Delgado and nearby Nampula Province, Barnabas Fund reported.

Since 2017, jihadists have perpetrated a violent reign of terror upon Christian communities in northern Mozambique. Because of the violence experienced in Cabo Delgado, it has become known as the “land of fear.”

Mozambique is No. 41 on Open Doors’ 2022 World Watch List of places most difficult to be a Christian.

“I have never felt the flames melting the skin off my veins, but I’ve been through hell in my mind. I’ve had the long sleepless nights, felt the breathless despair in the fight. I’ve laid on the ground crying for help. I’ve felt the rush of anxiety’s waves, and the guilt that won’t wash away, and the deep dread of hopeless days.”
