Israel launched a punishing military operation, which began late Thursday evening (June 12) against Iran. The attack targeted nuclear and missile facilities in what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called “Operation Rising Lion,” according to media reports.
The strikes reportedly included attacks on Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz and other sites tied to Iran’s nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programs. The mission, Netanyahu confirmed, aims to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power and will continue “for as many days as it takes.”
Israel reportedly used about 200 aircraft and activated pre-positioned explosive drones inside Iran, hitting nearly 100 targets, including a base near Tehran. The head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, was reportedly killed in the attack.
Iran retaliates
Iran quickly retaliated with drone strikes and vowed “severe punishment,” the Associated Press reported. The assault reportedly followed Iran’s announcement of a third enrichment facility after being censured by the U.N. nuclear watchdog.
The U.S. reportedly has confirmed it was not involved.
