Messengers approve Mohler amendment in first of required two years

The proposed SBC constitutional amendment making headlines in recent days about pastoral qualifications passed for its first of the needed two years with the required 2/3rds vote this morning (June 10) at the SBC Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

In under 10 minutes, Southern Seminary President Al Mohler spoke for the motion he made on Tuesday, two messengers spoke from the floor — one against and one for the amendment — then the second messenger called the question.

Messengers agreed, debate ended, ballots were marked and submitted. Of the 11,671 registered messengers, 8,074 voted. The vote announced an hour later was 74.66% to 25.09% in favor. Messengers must approve the constitutional amendment by a two-thirds vote next year too for it to be implemented.
