Mississippi College announced Monday (Nov. 18) it will officially change its name to Mississippi Christian University in 2026, coinciding with its bicentennial. The change, according to MC’s website, reflects the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and Christian values while preserving its iconic MC logo.
Approved by the Board of Trustees, the decision accompanies broader institutional changes, including academic restructuring and athletic realignment. The academic reorganization elevates Christian Studies as an interdisciplinary unit, merges several academic schools and modernizes programs to align with market needs.
Changes
The athletic realignment includes discontinuing the university’s football program to focus on enhancing its 17 remaining NCAA Division II sports and upgrading facilities.
“These transformative steps are essential for ensuring MC thrives for another 200 years,” said President Blake Thompson. University leaders aim to balance mission alignment, operational efficiency and financial sustainability through these initiatives.
Founded in 1826, MC is Mississippi’s oldest institution of higher learning.
