In his address to messengers to the 2026 SBC Annual Meeting, Al Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, offered a brief history lesson of SBC seminaries and their purpose: “to make certain that Southern Baptists had a faithful … mechanism for producing a learned ministry, an educated ministry.”

That priority remains today, he said, fueled by the support of churches and individuals through the Cooperative Program.
“You don’t just have a sort of interest in theological education — you fund theological education, you prioritize theological education. … For that, we are very thankful.”
