NC city withdraws ban of church ads on buses

The city of Durham, North Carolina, which barred a church advertisement from appearing on city buses, withdrew its ban after the church sent a demand letter claiming First Amendment violations.

NC city withdraws ban of church ads on buses

A North Carolina city has reversed its decision to bar a church advertisement from appearing on city buses, Decision Magazine reported. This reportedly  happened after the City of Durham received a demand letter accusing leaders of First Amendment violations.

Since 2007, the report noted, New Life Christian Center had advertised on Durham buses but this arrangement was disrupted when they were told in August its ad violated a policy banning religious advertising. First Liberty Institute, according to their letter, contended the rule amounted to viewpoint discrimination, calling it vague and inconsistently enforced. Citing recent federal court precedent, the group pressured the city to reverse the move. Durham withdrew the ban on Dec. 11, and the church is now allowed to continue advertising its ministry.
