Olympics update: IOC announces decision on protecting women’s competition

The International Olympic Committee announced Thursday (March 26) that only biological women will be allowed to compete in women’s Olympic events. This decision, which will take effect with the 2028 Los Angeles Games, reverses policies in place since 2004.

The decision, noted IOC President Kirsty Coventry, followed a review of scientific, medical and legal developments, according to the Associated Press. The review reportedly concluded biological differences impact fairness and the safety of athletes. The new policy requires one-time genetic testing.

While critics reportedly claim conflicting research and lack of transparency about the decision-making process, supporters of the decision contend it protects women’s competition.
