For those who stayed up to watch, it might have been a later-than-usual evening for some as President Donald Trump delivered the first official State of the Union address of his second term Tuesday (Feb. 24). For those who like to keep track of such things, the president’s speech lasted approximately one hour and 48 minutes — reportedly the the longest State of the Union in modern times.
During his speech, the president focused on projecting a hopeful vision for the United States while spotlighting numerous guests and sparking vocal responses from some Democrats sitting in the crowd. About 80 Democrats from both the Senate and the House of Representatives had announced they would boycott the event, USA Today reported.

Trump addressed a variety of issues. Among them were job growth, border security, and renewed tariff policies despite a recent Supreme Court setback, according to various news reports. The president also expressed support for a bill to ban gender-related surgical procedures for children without parental consent. He went on to warn Iran against pursuing nuclear weapons while touting success with a peace deal between Israel and Hamas.
Criticism and lighter moments
Democrats have sharply criticized the president’s policies and his economic record, and Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger gave the Democrat response following the State of the Union.
Among the lighter moments of the evening, the United States men’s Olympic hockey team attended the event following their victory against Canada for the gold on Sunday in the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. Trump announced the team’s goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his performance in the big game. The president said the women’s team will be visiting the White House soon following their win Feb. 19 in the gold medal final against Canada.
