RNC, Trump rally shooting draws spotlight this week

The Republican National Convention wrapped up Thursday evening (July 18) with former president Donald Trump accepting the GOP nomination during his speech. The Democrat National Convention is set for Aug. 19–22 in Chicago.

Trump took the stage with a bandaged right ear less than a week after nearly being assassinated on July 13 during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Opening his more than 90-minute speech, Trump shared — noting this would be the only time — details about his near-death experience, while also giving credit to God for his protection and honoring Corey Comperatore, who was killed during the shooting, and two others who were injured.

‘Providential moment?’

“I stand before you in this arena only by the grace of almighty God,” said Trump sharing his appreciation for the outpouring of support and concern since the shooting. “Many people say it was a providential moment. It probably was.”
