SBC 2022: June 14 PM Recap

Highlights from the second session of the 2022 Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting June 14:

  • Texas pastor Bart Barber is the new president of the Southern Baptist Convention. Barber received 60.87% of votes on a second runoff ballot.
  • Nathan Finn is the newly appointed recording secretary for the convention. Finn is provost at North Greenville University, and was elected with 51.31% of the vote.
  • Following the Sexual Abuse Task Force Report, messengers overwhelmingly approved the two recommendations proposed by the task force to appoint an Abuse Reform Implementation Task Force and develop a “Ministry Check” database of what is being described as the  “credibly accused.”
  • Saddleback Church in California pastor Rick Warren made a surprise appearance, sharing what he called a love letter to Southern Baptists in case this was his last convention to attend, he said. Saddleback is currently being reviewed by the Credentials Committee because of three female staff members who were ordained in 2021.
