Day one of the 2024 SBC Annual Meeting in Indianapolis is wrapped up, and as of tonight (June 11), we had nearly 10,900 messengers.
The Abuse Reform Implementation Task Force shared about the new prevention and response curriculum for churches. It’s available online at sbcabuseprevention.com. The Task Force also wrapped up its work and expressed gratitude to messengers for approving its recommendations in an attempt to help reform efforts continue.
Messengers voted to disaffiliate with First Baptist Church Alexandria in Virginia with over 90 percent of the vote because the church believes a woman can be “biblically qualified to fill the senior pastor position.”
All four recommendations made by the Cooperation Group were affirmed by messengers. The Cooperation Group was named last year to study what “friendly cooperation of faith and practice” means for SBC churches, focusing on faithfulness to the bible, clarity of mission, and cooperative unity.
The Great Commission Resurgence Evaluation Task Force made recommendations that include enhancing cooperation between NAMB and state conventions, increasing financial transparency and accountability, prioritizing church planting in underserved regions, as well as increasing efforts in evangelism strategies and resources for the local church.
Three motions introduced today will be voted on by messengers tomorrow morning (June 12). One would dissolve the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, one relates to studying decisions at the North American Mission Board and one would censure three SBC leaders.
