UPDATE — The Baptist Paper will provide on-site coverage (Feb. 17–18) at the Hilton Hotel near Nashville International Airport during the SBC Executive Committee meeting. Below is a summary of a news report released Thursday (Feb. 13) by Baptist Press.
The Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee will convene its annual February meeting Feb. 17–18 in Nashville. The committee is expected to address remaining motions from the 2024 SBC Annual Meeting in Indianapolis. During their September meeting, EC members passed 32 recommendations from EC officers and standing committees in response to motion referrals.
EC President Jeff Iorg highlighted progress in sexual abuse prevention, financial accountability and legal challenges. Last fall, the EC established a permanent Sexual Abuse Prevention and Response department, recently appointing Jeff Dalrymple as its leader. The finance committee revealed in September that the EC spent more than $12 million on legal expenses from 2021–2024 related to sexual abuse investigations. The committee also declined referrals to amend the SBC’s financial plan, citing ongoing revisions.
Legal updates
Legal updates at the February meeting may include pending lawsuits involving former SBC figures David Sills and Johnny Hunt. Iorg emphasized the EC’s commitment to addressing current challenges while focusing on future opportunities.
