The men’s soccer team from Curaçao, the smallest country to qualify for the World Cup, has found purpose beyond the 2026 FIFA scoreboard.
On June 20, Curaçao team members gathered around their Ecuadorian opponents after closing the game with a 0-0 draw. Led by players Kenji Gorré and Ecuador’s Moisés Caicedo, the Caribbean country’s team prayed over their Ecuadorian rivals. The virialized moment reflects a track record of public prayer and worship moments led by the team, nicknamed “The Blue Wave.”
‘HIStory’
Gorré, after the game, gave glory to God on Instagram, posting, “HIStory is being made. Thank You Jesus.”
On a Sports Spectrum podcast before the match against Ecuador, Gorré expressed, “One thing that God’s really taught me is that we have to have an audience of One, and that is playing for Jesus. That is playing not for your name to be glorified, but for His name to be glorified and understanding that it’s actually not about me.”
Curaçao was officially eliminated from the World Cup on Thursday, June 25, following a 2–0 loss to Ivory Coast at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
