Sophie Cunningham and the latest transgender sports controversy

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham is one of the best-known players in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and a committed Christian. She was re-baptized as an adult prior to this season and regularly speaks up about her faith on social media.

She has been in the news recently, however, for a subject that is relevant whether we follow women’s basketball or not. In a long profile published by ESPN, a few sentences in a single paragraph caused a cultural uproar. Here’s the quote:

“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’ I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

Closer look

As her opposition to biological men in women’s sports made headlines, those who agree have been staging rallies at her games to show their support, including yesterday in Minneapolis when the Fever played the Minnesota Lynx. Last Tuesday, as the Fever played the Storm in Seattle, two Cunningham supporters sat courtside at the arena holding signs. A co-owner of the Storm had an exchange with them for which she was later fined an undisclosed amount and suspended for five home games by the WNBA.

However, here’s the part of the story I want to focus on today: the fact that it is probably news to you. There has been little coverage in the larger media regarding Cunningham’s position on transgender sports.

This is very good news for a reason worth contemplating today.
