Bishop T.D. Jakes announced Sunday (April 27) that he will transition senior leadership of The Potter’s House, the 30,000-member Dallas megachurch he founded in 1996, to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and son-in-law, Touré Roberts. The appointment is set to take effect later in 2025.
Jakes, 67, made the announcement months after suffering a massive heart attack while preaching. “I cannot afford… to risk something happening to me and you be sheep without a shepherd,” he told his congregation, according to media reports. While stepping back from daily pastoral duties, Jakes will reportedly remain chairman of the board and spiritual overseer of the church.
Pursuing other initiatives
The transition reflects years of planning, including the 2023 appointment of assistant pastors and the launch of the “Woman Evolve” ministry, Jakes posted on social media. The move, he noted, is not a goodbye but “an expansion,” enabling the church and the T.D. Jakes Group to pursue broader community and economic development initiatives.
